a) Cloudflare
Our website uses the services of Cloudflare Inc. (USA) for secure and encrypted data transmission over the Internet (SSL), to improve website performance worldwide through Cloudflare’s Content Delivery Network (CDN), and to enhance security and protection against hacker attacks through Cloudflare’s Web Application Firewall (WAF). Cloudflare may use its own cookies to provide these services. A corresponding GDPR-compliant data processing agreement exists with Cloudflare. More detailed information about the GDPR and Cloudflare can be found on Cloudflare’s GDPR pages: www.cloudflare.com/de-de/gdpr/introduction/
What is Cloudflare?
A Content Delivery Network (CDN), such as the one offered by Cloudflare, is a network of servers connected via the Internet. Cloudflare has distributed these servers worldwide so that websites load faster on your screen. In short, Cloudflare makes copies of our website and places them on its own servers. When you visit our website, a load-balancing system ensures that most of our site is delivered from the server that can display our site the fastest. The data transfer distance to your browser is significantly shortened thanks to the CDN. Thus, the content of our website is delivered by Cloudflare not only from our hosting server but from servers all over the world. Using Cloudflare is especially useful for users abroad, as the page can be delivered from a nearby server. In addition to fast delivery, Cloudflare also offers several security services such as DDoS protection or the Web Application Firewall.
Why do we use Cloudflare on our website?
Of course, we want to offer you the best possible service with our website. Cloudflare helps us make our website faster and more secure. Cloudflare offers us web optimizations as well as security services such as DDoS protection and web firewalls. This includes a reverse proxy and the content delivery network (CDN). Cloudflare blocks threats and limits abusive bots and crawlers that waste our bandwidth and server resources. By storing our website in local data centers and blocking spam software, Cloudflare allows us to reduce our bandwidth usage by around 60%. Content delivery from a nearby data center and some web optimizations reduce the average load time of a website by about half. According to Cloudflare, the “I’m Under Attack Mode” setting can be used to mitigate new attacks by displaying a JavaScript computation task that must be solved before a user can access a web page. Overall, this makes our website much more powerful and less susceptible to spam or other attacks.
What data does Cloudflare store?
Cloudflare generally only forwards data that is controlled by website operators. Therefore, the content is not determined by Cloudflare, but always by the website operator. In addition, Cloudflare may collect certain information about the use of our website and process the data we send to it or for which Cloudflare has received the appropriate instructions. In most cases, Cloudflare receives data such as contact information, IP addresses, security fingerprints, DNS log data, and website performance data derived from browser activity. For example, log data helps Cloudflare detect new threats, thus ensuring high security protection for our website. Cloudflare processes this data as part of its services in accordance with applicable law, including, of course, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
For security reasons, Cloudflare also uses a cookie. The cookie (__cfduid) is used to identify individual users behind a shared IP address and to apply security settings for each individual user. This cookie is very useful, for example, if you use our website from a place where multiple computers are infected. However, if your computer is trusted, we can recognize it by the cookie, allowing you to navigate our website smoothly, even if there are infected computers nearby. It is also important to know that this cookie does not store any personal data. This cookie is essential for Cloudflare security features and cannot be disabled.
Cloudflare also works with third-party providers. They may only process personal data under Cloudflare’s instructions and in accordance with the privacy policy and other confidentiality and security measures. Cloudflare will not share any personal data without our explicit consent.
Cloudflare cookies
"__cfduid" Expiration: 1 month – Use: Used to identify individual users behind a shared IP address
How long and where is the data stored?
Cloudflare stores your information primarily in the U.S. and the European Economic Area. Cloudflare may transfer and access the information described above from anywhere in the world. In general, Cloudflare stores user-level data for Free, Pro, and Business domain versions for less than 24 hours.
How can I delete my data or prevent it from being stored?
Cloudflare retains log data only as long as necessary and, in most cases, this data is deleted within 24 hours. Cloudflare does not store personal data such as your IP address. However, there is some information Cloudflare stores indefinitely as part of its permanent logs to improve the overall performance of Cloudflare Resolver and identify any security risks. You can find exactly what permanent logs are stored at developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/commitment-to-privacy/privacy-policy/privacy-policy/. All data collected by Cloudflare (temporary or permanent) is stripped of all personal data. Cloudflare will also anonymize all permanent logs.
Cloudflare mentions in its privacy policy that it is not responsible for the content it receives. For example, if you ask Cloudflare whether they can update or delete your content, Cloudflare will always refer to us as the website operator. You can also completely prevent Cloudflare from collecting and processing your data by disabling script execution in your browser or using a script blocker.
Cloudflare actively participates in the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework, which regulates the correct and secure transfer of personal data. More information can be found at www.privacyshield.gov/participant.
